Some people describe a period of feeling shaken after a spiritual awakening. Old beliefs, relationships or plans may no longer fit, and the world can seem unfamiliar for a while. This isn’t a medical condition. It’s a very human response to big inner change.

Feeling unsettled is normal

When your outlook shifts, it can take time for the rest of your life to catch up. Confusion and restlessness are common.

Grief for what has changed

You might miss old certainties, communities or friendships. It’s okay to grieve them, even if you wouldn’t go back.

Others may not understand

Friends and family may not share your new interests. That doesn’t make either of you wrong. You can stay kind while being honest about who you are.

Go slowly

There’s no need to change everything at once. Keep familiar routines that help you feel steady, like regular meals, sleep and time outdoors.

Harm is never a gift

If someone treats you badly, that isn’t a spiritual test you must endure. You’re allowed to step away from people who hurt you.

Find kindred spirits

A book group, a meditation class or a walking friend can help you feel understood.

If low feelings stay heavy for a long while, please reach out for support; you don’t have to carry it alone.

How little is enough

Today, do one familiar, comforting thing slowly and with full attention.
