Reincarnation is the belief that something of a person, often called the soul, is reborn into a new life after death. It’s one of humanity’s oldest ideas, and people hold it in many different ways.

Many traditions

Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism include teachings about rebirth, often linked with karma. Buddhism speaks of rebirth too, though it describes it differently, without a fixed soul passing from life to life. In ancient Greece, Plato wrote about the soul choosing a new life in his story known as the myth of Er.

A belief, not a proof

There’s no scientific proof of reincarnation. Some people find it deeply meaningful; others don’t believe in it. Both views deserve respect.

Other ways of hope

Many faiths speak of an afterlife in other terms, such as heaven or resurrection. Some people find meaning in the idea that we live on through our children, our work and the love we leave behind.

What the idea can offer

For some, reincarnation brings comfort when facing death, or a sense that every life has a purpose. It can also encourage kindness, since every being is seen as part of the same great story.

This life still counts

Whatever you believe, this life is the one in front of you. The people you love and the choices you make today matter now.
