Self-awareness is the ability to notice your own thoughts, feelings and behaviour. For anyone on a spiritual path, it’s one of the most valuable skills to develop. And it’s something you can practise every day.

Noticing is the first step

Self-awareness starts with simply noticing: I feel irritated. I’m rushing. I’m avoiding this. There’s no need to judge what you notice.

Small insights count

You don’t need a dramatic breakthrough. Small realisations, like I tend to interrupt when I’m nervous, are valuable.

Autopilot is normal

Much of daily life runs on habit. That’s useful, but noticing when you’re on autopilot gives you more choice.

Spiritual words aren’t the same as awareness

It’s easy to talk about awareness without practising it. Honest noticing, especially of uncomfortable things, is what helps.

One practice is enough

You don’t need a long list of exercises. Choose one practice, like journaling, mindful breathing or an evening reflection, and return to it regularly.

How little is enough

Tonight, write down one moment from today when you noticed what you were feeling.
