Your genes play an important part in who you are. They influence your height, your eye colour and some aspects of your health. But genes aren’t the whole story. The way you live and the world around you matter too.
Genes and environment work together
Researchers have long known that both nature and nurture shape our lives. A field of research called epigenetics looks at how our surroundings and habits may influence the way genes are used. It’s an exciting area, though much is still being learned.
Daily habits still matter
Whatever your genes, everyday habits can support your wellbeing:
- eating plenty of vegetables, fruit and whole foods;
- moving your body in ways you enjoy;
- getting enough sleep;
- spending time with people you care about;
- finding ways to ease stress.
No blame
It’s important to remember that many things are outside our control. If you’re living with a health condition, it isn’t because you thought the wrong thoughts or failed to try hard enough. Genes, luck and circumstances all play a part.
A hopeful view
Knowing that your choices can make a difference can feel empowering. You don’t need to be perfect. Small, steady habits count.
How little is enough
Choose one small habit to nurture this week, like an evening walk or an earlier bedtime.
