Intuition is that quiet sense of knowing that seems to arrive without conscious reasoning. It can draw on past experience and subtle cues we don’t consciously notice. While it isn’t always right, it can be a valuable source of insight.
Here are four ways to get in touch with your intuition.
1. Notice your first sense
When you face a decision, notice your first feeling about it. You don’t have to act on it immediately, but paying attention helps you learn when your intuition is helpful.
2. Make time for quiet
Intuition often speaks softly. Quiet time, such as a walk, journaling or a few minutes of stillness, can help you hear it.
3. Listen to your body
Many people notice intuition as a physical feeling: a sense of ease or unease, lightness or tightness. Notice what your body tells you, while remembering that physical feelings can also come from hunger, tiredness or stress.
4. Balance intuition with thought
Intuition and reasoning work well together. When you have an intuitive sense, take a moment to think it through. Ask, Does this fit with what I know?
Intuition takes practice
The more you notice your intuition and reflect on how it guides you, the more you’ll learn to trust it, and to recognise when it might be fear or habit instead.
How little is enough
Next time you face a small decision, pause and notice your first feeling about it before deciding.
