Happiness isn’t about having everything you want or feeling cheerful all the time. Many happy people simply have habits that help them appreciate life as it is.
Here are four qualities that many happy people share.
1. They’re present
Happy people tend to live in the moment. Instead of constantly worrying about the future or dwelling on the past, they pay attention to what’s happening now: the taste of their food, the conversation they’re having, the feeling of the sun.
Try this: Choose one daily activity, like drinking your morning tea, and give it your full attention.
2. They smile when they mean it
A genuine smile can lift your mood and the moods of those around you. But forcing a smile when you’re struggling doesn’t usually help. Let your smiles be real, and let yourself feel what you feel.
Try this: Notice what naturally makes you smile today, and seek out a little more of it.
3. They practise gratitude
Happy people notice what they have, rather than focusing on what’s missing. Many keep a gratitude journal or take a moment each day to appreciate something.
Try this: Write down one thing you’re grateful for before bed.
4. They spend time outdoors
Time in nature can help you feel calmer and more connected. Even a short walk or a few minutes in a garden can lift your spirits.
Try this: Step outside for five minutes today and simply notice what’s around you.
Happiness isn’t a test
You don’t need all four qualities to be happy, and everyone has hard days. These are simply gentle habits that can make room for more joy.
