Ayurveda, the traditional system of wellbeing from India, includes many simple daily rituals. You don’t need to follow the whole system to enjoy them. Here are five gentle self-care rituals inspired by Ayurveda, offered as ways to relax rather than as treatments.

1. Tongue scraping

Gently scraping your tongue in the morning, with a tongue scraper or the edge of a spoon, removes the coating that builds up overnight. Many people find it leaves their mouth feeling fresh. Scrape lightly from back to front a few times, then rinse.

2. Oil pulling

Oil pulling involves swishing a spoonful of oil, like coconut or sesame oil, around your mouth for a few minutes. Some people enjoy it as part of their morning routine. Spit the oil into the bin rather than the sink, never swallow it and keep brushing and flossing as usual; oil pulling doesn’t replace them.

3. Dry brushing

Using a soft, natural-bristle brush on dry skin before a shower can feel invigorating. Use light, sweeping strokes toward your heart. Be gentle, and skip any areas with broken, sore or sensitive skin.

4. Self-massage with oil (abhyanga)

Abhyanga is a warm oil massage you give yourself. Warm a little sesame, almond or coconut oil, then massage it slowly into your skin, from your scalp to your feet. Take your time and enjoy the sense of care. Try a small patch of skin first if you’re unsure how an oil will suit you, and step carefully afterwards, as oily feet can be slippery.

5. A warm, restful bath

End the day with a warm bath. Add a few drops of a gentle scent if you like, or simply soak and breathe slowly. Keep the water warm rather than hot, and sip some water afterwards.

Making it your own

You don’t need to do all five rituals. Choose the ones that feel good to you and fit into your day.

How little is enough

Choose one ritual to try this week. Do it slowly, with full attention, as an act of care for yourself.
