Sometimes it’s hard to know whether you’re following your intuition or being driven by fear. Both can feel urgent and convincing. Here are six warning signs that fear may be in charge, and gentle ways to respond.

1. The past controls the present

If you find yourself expecting the same hurt to happen again, fear may be at work. Try asking, Is this situation really the same as before?

2. Every thought meets a negative answer

When each idea is met with That won’t work or What if it goes wrong?, fear is likely speaking. Intuition can warn you, but it doesn’t usually shut everything down.

3. You’re not giving yourself time to listen

Intuition often speaks quietly. If you’re always busy, it can get drowned out. Small pauses in your day can help you hear it.

4. You’re overthinking

Going over the same thoughts again and again is a common sign of fear. Intuition tends to be simple and clear.

5. You keep repeating a pattern

If you notice you keep making the same choices and ending up in the same place, fear may be steering you without you realising.

6. You’ve lost the sense that you’ll be okay

Fear makes everything feel threatening. Intuition, by contrast, often carries a quiet sense that you’ll be okay, even when things are hard.

Responding with kindness

Noticing fear doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong. Fear is trying to protect you. Take a breath, thank it for trying to help and then look at the situation again with fresh eyes.

How little is enough

Next time you feel a strong urge, pause and take three slow breaths before acting. Notice what changes.
