Karma is an ancient idea found in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. At its simplest, it describes the principle of cause and effect: our actions, words and intentions shape what follows, for ourselves and others.
You don’t need to see karma as a cosmic scoreboard to find wisdom in it. It can simply be a reminder that how we live matters. Here are seven gentle principles, inspired by the idea of karma, that can help guide everyday life.
1. What you focus on grows
Your goals and intentions shape where your energy goes. Choose aims that reflect your values, and let them guide your daily choices.
2. Be present
Life happens in this moment. When you’re fully present with what you’re doing, your actions tend to be wiser and kinder.
3. Take responsibility
Owning your choices, including your mistakes, gives you the power to learn and grow. Responsibility isn’t about blame. It’s about recognising where you can make a difference.
4. Laugh often
Humour and lightness can soften difficult moments and connect us with others. Not taking yourself too seriously is a gift to everyone around you.
5. Be patient
Many good things take time to grow. Patience allows seeds of kindness, effort and change to take root.
6. Be kind
Kindness tends to ripple outward. A thoughtful word or helpful act can brighten someone’s day, and often our own too.
7. Embrace change
Everything changes. Rather than resisting it, we can meet change with curiosity and openness, trusting that each new chapter brings its own lessons.
A gentle note about karma
It’s important to remember that karma isn’t a way to explain why people suffer. Illness, poverty, loss and harm happen to good people, and no one deserves blame for hardship they didn’t choose. Karma, in the gentlest sense, is about how we choose to act, not about judging others.
How little is enough
Choose one principle to focus on this week. Perhaps it’s patience, kindness or presence. Let it guide a few small choices each day.
