You think of an old friend, and moments later your phone lights up with their name. You’re wrestling with a decision, and a stranger on the bus says the very words you needed to hear. These meaningful coincidences are often called synchronicity.

The word was coined by the psychiatrist Carl Jung to describe events that seem connected by meaning rather than by cause. Whether you see them as messages, patterns or happy accidents, they can be a lovely invitation to pause and reflect.

Here are seven gentle ways to interpret synchronicity when it appears.

1. Notice it without a trial

When a coincidence catches your attention, simply notice it. You don’t need to prove anything or decide what it means right away. A quiet huh, interesting is enough.

2. Ask what you’ve been thinking about

Synchronicities often seem to echo what’s already on our minds. Ask yourself, What have I been focused on lately? The coincidence may be highlighting something you care about.

3. Don’t force a message

Not every coincidence needs to carry a big meaning. Let it be what it is. Sometimes the gift is simply a moment of wonder.

4. Ask one honest question

If a synchronicity feels significant, ask one gentle question: What might this be inviting me to notice? Let the answer come in its own time.

5. Take a small step, if it feels right

If a coincidence seems to point towards something, like calling a friend or exploring an idea, you might take one small, sensible step in that direction.

6. Write it down

Keep a note of meaningful coincidences in a journal. Over time, you may notice patterns or themes that help you understand yourself better.

7. Stay grounded

Synchronicities can be inspiring, but big decisions are best made with a clear head, good information and advice from people you trust. Let coincidences add wonder to your life without replacing common sense.

Welcoming more wonder

Many people find they notice more synchronicities when they slow down and pay attention. Mindfulness, time in nature and a curious attitude can all help you spot the small surprises woven through ordinary days.

How little is enough

Next time a coincidence makes you smile, pause for a moment and notice it. Write it down if you like. That simple attention is a lovely way to stay open to life’s mysteries.
