You’ve heard mindfulness can help. You’ve tried sitting quietly. And within seconds, your mind was planning dinner, replaying a conversation and wondering whether you locked the back door. If that sounds familiar, you’re not doing it wrong. You’re simply human.

Every beginner struggles with mindfulness at first. Here are some gentle tips to help you find your way in.

1. Start with one real minute

You don’t need to meditate for half an hour. One minute of genuine attention is far more valuable than twenty minutes of frustration. Set a timer for sixty seconds, breathe and notice. That’s a real practice.

2. Use your breath

Your breath is always with you. Feel the air at your nose or the rise and fall of your belly. When your mind wanders, and it will, gently bring it back. That moment of returning is the practice, not a failure.

3. Keep a scrap of paper nearby

If your to-do list keeps interrupting, jot the items down quickly and come back to your breath. Your mind can relax once it knows nothing will be forgotten.

4. Use a simple object

If sitting in silence feels too empty, focus on something simple: a candle flame, the sound of a clock, a smooth stone in your hand. Having something to rest your attention on can make it easier.

5. Try an app if it helps

Guided recordings can be helpful when you’re starting out. Many free options are available. If an app makes practice easier, use it. If it feels like another thing to keep up with, let it go.

Mindfulness beyond sitting

You don’t have to sit still to practise. Try being fully present while you brush your teeth, drink your tea, walk to the shop or wash the dishes. Everyday moments are perfect opportunities.

Be kind to yourself

Some days your mind will be calm. Other days it will feel like a busy market. Both are normal. Mindfulness isn’t about achieving a perfect state. It’s about noticing, again and again, with kindness.

If sitting quietly ever brings up difficult feelings, keep practices short, open your eyes and ground yourself by feeling your feet on the floor.

How little is enough

One minute a day for a week. That’s all. Notice how it feels, and build from there if you’d like to.
