Is space and time an illusion? This idea appears in both modern physics and spiritual teachings, though in very different ways.

What physics says

Einstein’s theories of relativity showed that time and space are linked, and that time can pass at different rates depending on speed and gravity. Satellites used for navigation must even adjust for this. Physics doesn’t say time is unreal, but it shows time is stranger than it seems.

Einstein’s words

After the death of his friend Michele Besso, Einstein wrote that for people who believe in physics, the distinction between past, present and future is “only a stubbornly persistent illusion”. He was writing words of comfort, not a lesson in spirituality.

Spiritual views

Some spiritual traditions teach that time is a human construction, and that only the present moment truly exists. These are spiritual maps, not physics.

Living in time

Whatever you believe, clocks, calendars and appointments still help us live together. It’s fine to keep them.

The present moment

Many people find peace in focusing on the present, whether or not time is an illusion.

How little is enough

For one minute, notice only what’s happening right now: sounds, sensations and breath.
