Many people describe moments when life feels more vivid, connected or meaningful than usual. These are sometimes called spiritual experiences or “awakenings”. Some surveys suggest that a large number of people report having had at least one such experience.
What these moments can feel like
People describe a sense of peace, joy, deep connection or awe. The world might seem more alive. These moments can arise in nature, during meditation, while listening to music or in quiet everyday moments.
Ordinary and extraordinary
Spiritual experiences don’t make anyone special or better than others. Many people never have dramatic experiences and still live deeply meaningful lives.
Experiences during hard times
Some people describe moments of insight or connection during difficult times, such as loss or illness. This doesn’t mean hardship is a gift or something to seek out. It simply means that people can find meaning even in hard moments.
No need to chase them
Spiritual experiences can’t be forced. Chasing them can lead to frustration. Instead, you can create space for presence: time outdoors, quiet moments and attention to the people you love.
Making sense of your experience
If you’ve had an experience like this, you might like to write about it or share it with a friend. Let it be what it was, without needing to explain it fully.
How little is enough
Today, spend five minutes outdoors or in quiet, simply noticing what’s around you.
