Self-awareness is the ability to notice your thoughts, feelings and patterns. It’s not a score or a personality type. It’s a skill anyone can practise, and it can help you live with more kindness and intention.

Here are four gentle ways to become more self-aware.

1. Notice your autopilot

Much of what we do happens automatically. That’s normal; habits help us get through the day. But sometimes it’s useful to pause and ask, Why am I doing this? How am I feeling right now?

Your gut feelings are worth noticing too, though they aren’t always right. Sometimes a strong feeling comes from hunger, tiredness or an old fear. Self-awareness includes being curious about where your feelings come from.

2. Keep a notebook

Writing a few lines each day about what happened and how you felt can help you notice patterns. You don’t need to write a lot; a sentence or two is enough.

3. Ask one person for feedback

Others sometimes see things in us that we miss. Ask a friend or family member you feel safe with, What’s one thing you think I do well? What’s one thing I could work on? Listen with curiosity rather than defensiveness.

4. Try something new

Stepping slightly outside your usual routine can teach you about yourself. Notice how you feel when you try a new activity, meet new people or take on a small challenge.

Self-awareness with kindness

As you learn more about yourself, you’ll notice things you like and things you’d like to change. Treat both with kindness. Becoming a better person is a gentle, lifelong process, not a race.

How little is enough

Tonight, write one sentence about how you felt today and what might have caused it.
