Taoist tradition speaks of three treasures within each person: jing, qi and shen. These are often translated as essence, vital energy and spirit. They’re part of a rich tradition, offered here as a map for reflection rather than as science.

Here are the three treasures, and simple ways to honour each.

1. Jing: essence

Jing is described as our deep reserve of vitality. You might honour it through rest, good sleep and not overextending yourself.

2. Qi: vital energy

Qi is described as the energy that flows through life. Gentle movement, fresh air and nourishing food can help you feel energised.

3. Shen: spirit

Shen is described as the spirit or mind. Quiet reflection, kindness and meaningful connection can nurture it.

A living tradition

These ideas belong to a deep tradition with many teachers and texts. This is a simple introduction, offered with respect.

Everyday wisdom

Whatever your beliefs, rest, movement and reflection are good for body and mind.
