Have you ever felt that you’ve lived a moment before? Or noticed a coincidence so striking it felt meaningful? Deja vu and synchronicity are experiences many people share.

Deja vu

Deja vu is the feeling that you’ve experienced something before, even though you know you haven’t. Researchers think it may be related to how memory works, though it’s not fully understood. Most people experience it now and then.

Synchronicity

The Swiss thinker Carl Jung used the word synchronicity for meaningful coincidences, events that seem connected by meaning rather than cause. Seeing the same number repeatedly or thinking of a friend just before they call are common examples.

A note on quantum physics

Some writers link these experiences to quantum entanglement. Entanglement is a real phenomenon in physics, but it applies to tiny particles, not to human experiences like deja vu.

Finding meaning

Coincidences can prompt reflection, even if they’re simply chance. You might ask, What was I thinking about when this happened?

Keep it gentle

Meaningful moments can be enjoyed without needing to treat them as messages or signs you must follow.

How little is enough

Today, notice one coincidence or moment that feels meaningful, and write it down.
